Weekly update 3- 7th December
Dear Parents,
This week we focused on PSPE, we discussed kindness and why kindness is important. We put together a short i-movie for assembly.
Students had a deeper look into perspective one of our key concept for this unit. Students looked and discussed pictures that could be viewed in different ways. This was a teachable moment as we had discussions on different perspectives, this means that people may have different views and opinions and that we need to respects each other perspectives and reach a consensus.
What is it, a Duck or a Rabbit?
Students had to put on their thinking caps and work in groups to do activities on problem-solving, brain teasers and unscramble the words.
Spirit week!
Here are some videos students made about the field trip to Transnamib Train Station.
Happy holidays, and safe travels.

Weekly update 26- 30 November 2018
Dear Parents,
This was a very productive and interactive week. Students shared timelines on how technology has changed over time, the reasons therefor and how new technological inventions aids us to learn and communicate better, easier and more effectively. Students watched video's of and discussed the latest invention in the world, this lead to deeper inquiries of advantages and disadvantages of modern technology.
Students have been creating their devices for the future in the class, it seems like we have some future scientists and inventors brewing in grade 2.
We felt it fit to integrate Digital Citizenship for this weeks ICT lesson in a collaborative and fun manner. Eight QR codes were hidden in the classroom, students were requested to search for them. Once they were found students scanned the QR codes by independently finding the QR scanner App on the I-pads. The QR codes took students to several different videos about Digital Citizenship, such as be kind online, tell an adult, personal information, what is the internet?
Students then applied some summarizing skills taught in English to jot down the main ideas for group sharing and presentations.
Ms.Sharon our school nurse came to speak with students on personal hygiene and self-care. Students had fun with the interactive games and sharing of ideas. Ms. Sharon will continue next week with another lesson on self-control, making good decisions, being kind and caring towards others.
Drop everything and read Friday!
Enjoy the weekend.

Weekly update 19th -23rd November
Dear Parents,
In Math, students have been sharing and discovering a variety of additional methods to use in algorithms. Amongst them were trade first and the partial sum method. Students enjoyed sharing and peer teaching each other on some of the methods parents have shown them at home. Students will continue to practice these addition algorithms next week, as not all learners have grasped this concept.
Homework of the coming weeks:
No-tech week 26-30 November, students are requested to not use any devices for the whole week. students will reflect on the no tech week next Friday. Students will keep and update a login book of their daily activities. Students will reflect on how they experienced the no tech week next Friday. Encourage your child to create games to keep themselves entertained during the no tech week. We would love students to bring in their games for us to try at school.
Math:
Discuss time e.g we'll be leaving in five minutes, we'll leave at 3:00, etc.
Talk with your child about how you use math every day and show them how you use math. We continue to look at various ways to represent data.
When cooking, ask your child to help and study measuring with you, e.g temperature, quantities, capacity, and weight.
Encourage your child to measure things at home e.g family heights, foot size. Encourage them to draw and measure lines using different lengths using rulers. This is a great hand-eye coordination practice.
Talk about real-life measurement- e.g speed when traveling to/ from school, adding up grocery items, weighing fruits and vegetables at the market, how you determine how much milk, flour, sugar, and other staples to buy for your family, etc.
Do activities on Mathletics
Language:
Students are bringing home leveled readers. They must read every day, and out loud to an adult at least twice a week.
Spelling City activities.
Students had an awesome time at the post office, ask your child to tell you all about it.

Weekly update 12-15th November
Dear Parents,
Students went on a scavenger hunt to identify and make authentic connections of the different forms of communication around the school campus. Ms.Catherine from the office conveniently called for Ms. Debbie over the intercom speaker to come to the office, this helped students realized that the intercom is used at school to make announcements, and to worn of fire drills.
For the upcoming week, parents are requested to make their own communication timelines for students to present in class. You need to give a timeline of your communication history from birth to date. We have a couple of Field Trips lined up for the upcoming weeks to help our students with their inquiry journey of the unit.
In language, students have started writing descriptive essays. We discussed how voice is an important part of writing to help the reader see what the writer wants to convey. We had a writing session with Oranges were students had to incorporate their five senses into their writing. Students also wrote a reflection about International day were they also used their senses to add voice and detail to their writing.
ICT integration was ongoing this week as students continued to discover and create patterns for the Sphero to form squares and triangles, Some students were challenged when they had to follow a car track on our classroom carpet.
Homework:
1. Please help students access the blog to view their homework for the following weeks as part of the authentic connection to how technology helps us learn.
2. Have talked about the positive and negative effects of technology.
3. Choose a gadget/device of (form) of communication then find out how it works for class sharing.
4. Bring in communication or technology devices that can be added to our class Museum.
5. Learn a new method for doing addition and subtraction sums then share with the class.
6. Students need to bring an envelope and local stamp to school.
7. Spelling city and Mathlectics (new activities have been assigned)

Central idea: People work together to transform foods and goods needed
Checklist: For my interactive table (17-26 October 2018 ) ongoing for the next 2 weeks.
- Select a food or good (source) to investigate
- Find out what is needed to make this food or good. Example: Wheat grains – flour, oranges – orange juice, animal skin - into clothes, wood- paper etc.
- Research, collect and show the steps the food/goods go through to be used by people.
- Collect the materials, pictures, make drawings to help you explain the process of your food or good, who helps with this process and where it comes from.
- Connect this to the people who need this most and explain why it is important.
Students will be working on their presentations in class, please only help them source, collect information and items for their presentations, it's not to be done at home.
This week for Literacy students learned the use of "a, an" and the" in sentences. They had to know the English rules to this. Ask them to explain what they learned. Students had to apply this knowledge when writing their story with food as a superhero. During writing, they had to apply punctuation marks and adjectives, using the 5 w's when, where, what, why and who to stretch out sentences. Students used a student-friendly writing rubric to self -edit and reflect on their writing.

Weekly Update 1-5 October 2018
Dear Parents,
This week found students tuning into our new unit How We Organize Ourselves. The central idea: People work together to transform foods and goods needed.
Students observed and recorded what they see, think and wonder about when looking at these items in the walk-in gallery. View picture below.
For Math Students collected data on where they shop for groceries. They then used the data to draw bar graphs in groups. Students did some activities on nonstandard measurement e.g how many finger spaces, how many steps long is the carpet. They also estimate lengths of items then students used their rulers to measure the actual lengths of items with a ruler. It was interesting to see how they handeled the rulers to do their measurements.
This week in Literature students looked at what good readers do. Our focus point for this week was good readers make predictions. For the past weeks, we have been reading Charlotte's Web as our class reader. We have read up to Chapter 8. Students were asked to write what they thought would happen in the next chapter by making predictions. Students referred to the previous chapters as a guide in writing a realistic story, using the same character etc.
A friendly reminder that International day is soon approaching (10th of November) Grade 2 is representing our Neighbouring country Botswana. Please make time to go onto our Lino platform that was created for you to add your thoughts and ideas for International day.
The grade 2 teachers will summarize all your ideas and thoughts, then give feedback after the break on the way forward.
Homework:
U.O.I
Students can inquire into what foods and goods are. What the differences are? Where do foods and goods come from?
Math
Bring empty food and drink containers to school.
Help in the kitchen with baking and measuring.
Sharing
Gathering information, interesting facts about Botswana.
See you on the 15th of October.... until then enjoy your break.
More on coding, that was done earlier this week

Weekly Newsletter 10th-14th September
Dear Parents,
In Literacy, students learned about making connections to understand their reading. Ask them about the 3 types of connections that good readers use and how they made connections to our class reader Charlotte's Web. They worked on word creation for homework this week, I trust they were able to do this activity. This activity help students to build the vocabulary by unscrambling the letters to make1 letter, 2 letter, 3 letter, 4 letter words and eventually they discover the secret word. The secret this week was swings/wings.
In Literacy, students learned about making connections to understand their reading. Ask them about the 3 types of connections that good readers use and how they made connections to our class reader Charlotte's Web. Students did words sorts, this is an activity where each student receives their leveled words.
They then do closed and opening sorting of the words and explain to a partner why they have
sorted their words in a certain way.

Weekly Newsletter 3rd-7th September 2018
Dear Parents,
What a busy week we had! firstly I'd like to thank all parents for your generous contribution towards our fundraising week, it was a HUGE success!!! We Made N$ 3538.
This week kicked off with our grade 2 students confidently and happily taking their MAP tests for Math. One of the benefits of using i-pads as a learning tool in the class is that students become comfortable and confident when working with them.
For further inquiry into our unit, we had a few interactive guests for a wellness day share their knowledge and expertise about wellbeing with the students. The students had fun making authentic connections to real life activities about keeping well, they discovered physical, mental, social, and emotional factors that all contribute to their wellbeing. The excitement extended to home as students shared stories of how they are striking a balance for their well-being by encouraging parents to serve and pack balanced meals! The discussions led to talks about the food pyramid and making informed choices about our lives. We are glad to note all the things parents are doing to keep themselves well, amongst them are eating healthy, exercising and resting and sleeping well.

In math, we are consolidating and getting to know numbers, and the value thereof (number sense) to build up a base for future reference when they are solving Mathematical problems. They were identifying patterns within the Hundreds chart. and used the 10 base, place value to gain a better concept of numbers and their values.

Weekly update 20-24th August
Dear Parents,
Students are starting to settle in well. The goal and focus for the new year of school is respecting and supporting students voice, choice, and ownership of there learning. Students had a voice on how and what they wanted to learn. This week they had free choice, the activities included finding information about their classmates (collecting Data) writing stories of their holiday recounts, reflecting on their first few days of school, reviewing and discussing the Learner Profiles, students drew pictures, role played and presented their work in various ways. Students drew pictures of themselves and wrote down things they would like people to know about themselves, as we still continue to get to know each other. Students continued to learn about number through play and did not even notice that they were learning about numbers.
