Weekly update 14-19th October 2018

Dear Parents,

I would like to remind you that I will be out for a conference in Senegal from Thursday 18th October at 9:00 to Thursday the 26th October 2018. Work has been prepared and discussed with Ms.Sinead, she will be leading the class for those days.

Homework for the week: (Sharing)

1. Identify things at home, and in your surroundings and discuss where they come from.
2. Cut out pictures of goods and foods from magazines, students will use these pictures to sort them into categories in class.

Unit 1: How we Organise Ourselves
Central idea: People work together to transform foods and goods needed
Checklist: For my interactive table (17-26 October 2018 ) ongoing for the next 2 weeks.
  1. Select a food or good (source) to investigate
  2. Find out what is needed to make this food or good. Example: Wheat grains – flour, oranges – orange juice, animal skin - into clothes, wood- paper etc.
  3. Research, collect and show the steps the food/goods go through to be used by people.
  4. Collect the materials, pictures, make drawings to help you explain the process of your food or good, who helps with this process and where it comes from.
  5. Connect this to the people who need this most and explain why it is important.

Students will be working on their presentations in class, please only help them source, collect information and items for their presentations, it's not to be done at home.

This week for Literacy students learned the use of "a, an" and the" in sentences. They had to know the English rules to this. Ask them to explain what they learned. Students had to apply this knowledge when writing their story with food as a superhero. During writing, they had to apply punctuation marks and adjectives, using the 5 w's when, where, what, why and who to stretch out sentences. Students used a student-friendly writing rubric to self -edit and reflect on their writing.

Students worked in groups to create scenes from our class reader Charlotte's Web.  They created 3D characters and the setting. They recorded this work on Seesaw, for your viewing.

Weekly Update 1-5 October 2018

Dear Parents,

This week found students tuning into our new unit How We Organize Ourselves. The central idea: People work together to transform foods and goods needed.
Students observed and recorded what they see, think and wonder about when looking at these items in the walk-in gallery. View picture below.

For Math Students collected data on where they shop for groceries. They then used the data to draw bar graphs in groups. Students did some activities on nonstandard measurement e.g how many finger spaces, how many steps long is the carpet. They also estimate lengths of items then students used their rulers to  measure the actual lengths of items with a ruler. It was interesting to see how they handeled the rulers to do their measurements.

This week in Literature students looked at what good readers do. Our focus point for this week was good readers make predictions. For the past weeks, we have been reading Charlotte's Web as our class reader. We have read up to Chapter 8. Students were asked to write what they thought would happen in the next chapter by making predictions. Students referred to the previous chapters as a guide in writing a realistic story, using the same character etc.

A friendly reminder that International day is soon approaching (10th of November) Grade 2 is representing our Neighbouring country Botswana. Please make time to go onto our Lino platform that was created for you to add your thoughts and ideas for International day.
The grade 2 teachers will summarize all your ideas and thoughts, then give feedback after the break on the way forward.

PYP Newsletter Unit 2

Dear Parents,

Please find the PYP Newsletter for unit 2  here ( How we organize ourselves)

This week students will continue their presentations on being a wellness expert. All presentations and reflections of the factors that contribute to well-being will be shared on seesaw for your viewing. Please encourage your child to continuously make good choices and take responsibility for their health.

Students discussed what a pattern is, where they have seen patterns before then created their own
patterns by using some classroom materials to do so. Students discovered some patterns on the hundreds chart and continued to apply their knowledge of patterns to solve number puzzles.

Students went on a scavenger hunt to find patterns around the school. see the pictures below.

This week our tech coach Mr. D integrated with our learning on patterns by sharing a lesson
on coding with students. During the lesson, students played a game that required them to
create patterns for their characters to be able to make a move.
This lesson helped them to make authentic connections to using patterns in our
everyday lives. E.g to operate your washing machine.
