PYP Newsletter Unit 4

Dear Parents,

How the world works is a science-based unit. Students may want to bring in items, equipment or apparatus to experiment in class. Please allow them as this will drive our inquiry.

During this week students will co-plan with the teacher on what they would like to know about how the world works, what experiments they'd like to do and the skills they would want to have after this unit.

This is students homework for the next two weeks, they have received a hard copy today.

Have a look at the PYP Newsletter for our inquiry journey for the next 6 weeks.

Weekly update 14th- 18th January 2018

Dear Parents,

This week students ventured into prepositions. A preposition connects a noun or a pronoun to the rest of the sentence. Or as a explained it in a simpler form '' a preposition tells us where an item, object or person is."

Students applied their understanding of preposition by cutting out pictures from a magazine. They wrote sentences about the picture and underlined the prepositions. See some examples below. These tasks proved challenging for some students.

Students were introduced to the 6 writing traits. These are ongoing lessons that will be referred to throughout the semester during writing lessons. All these elements add to being a good writer.

A message from Ms. Laetitia:

I am glad to share with you a small part of our French lesson with Mimi participating.
My students introduced themselves in French in front of Mimi and she was invited to translate/explain in English what they said. They learned from each other.
Well done! Bravo! my students

A special bravo to Ms. Kathleen, Mimi will be fluent soon you are a star!

Reminder: Grade 2 Open house on the 24th of January from 7:25-8:00. Students will share their learner about how advances in technology help us communicate and learn better.

Grade 2D students would like to have a box of recycling material in the class. We will use the materials in the box for our stem/ makerspace corner. Please help collect and send empty containers, boxes, jar, paper plates, cotton wool, toothpicks, anything that we could use to school. See an example of a stem activity below.

Homework:

1. Bring mini marshmallows and toothpicks (makerspace)
2. Spelling city and Mathletics
3. Reading and making sense during & after reading.
Ask the following questions to help at home:

1. What is happening while you are reading the story, try to put it in your own words.
2. Try to relate to things happening in the story. Does this story remind you of any others?  Has the situation in the story happened to you or someone you know? How does the situation in the story affect people in your city/state, country or the world?
3. How did the situation in the story happen? What would you do differently How are you like/, unlike the character? How would you change the ending of the story? Is there a lesson to be learned in the story? What is the main idea of the story/chapter? Why do you think the author wrote the story?

Time table and reminders

Have a restful weekend.

Weekly update 8th-11th January 2019

Dear parents and students welcome back to school, I trust you had a lovely holiday with your loved ones.

Weekly update and dates to remember.

In light of the loss of Mikes mother, Ms. Sharon had a class discussion to address any questions or concerns that students may have. We further discussed and came up with ideas on how we as a class can support Mike.

The new semester jumped off on a fun note as students shared their holidays with a picture. Students drew a picture about something they did over the holiday. They were instructed to divide their page into four parts. Students were given 5,10,20, and 30 seconds to draw their picture in each box. Students handed their drawing to a friend to try and guess what the picture is about.

Click here to view some drawings.

Students were challenged with a Stem activity. After reading the well-known story of the Gingerbread man, students were instructed to design a trap to catch the gingerbread man in 20 mins, using resources found in their surrounding area.

Students set goals for 2019, navigate through the picture and click on the video recorder to hear their goals.
